I have been managing backups for years now. I have experience in data backup and data retention. Making them secure and making sure that the backups are completed. Lots of my backups are local with offsite replication. The off-site replication is in case of fire, floods, and other random acts of God.
Let the robots do the backups!
Every now and then I have a conversation about backups with a customer and they will give me the old “don’t worry, I do all my backups manually”. The problem with that is that humans just simply don’t do backups well. Sure, they might be good at it for a few months or years, but things come up. Life gets complicated and backups get missed.
Back in the days of backup tapes (like LTO 1,2,3,4,5 – for other IT boomers like me), people would forget to change the tapes all the time. We would call the customers and the main contact person would say something like “yes, I forgot” or “I forgot it at home” or “it’s in my car” – none of these are the fault of a person, it’s just something that people do. Things come up, time gets stretched and things get dropped. That’s why they made tape autoloaders that would house 10+ tapes.
What I’m trying to say is that humans miss backups because life comes at you fast sometimes. The best thing to do is have the robots aka backup software on a schedule with reporting that you can confirm your backups are being done. Enterprise IT does this with backup notification emails and usually one person heads up this job and checks them every day. Monitoring backups is 50% of the job of a backup administrator.
Back Blaze makes backing up Windows easy!
I really like Back Blaze and their backup software. It’s everything you could need for the home and business users. Its backups up automatically and gives you a nice log of what it’s done. It will also sync those changes to the cloud automatically and doesn’t really require any user involvement after the installation and configuration.
The best thing about Back Blaze is they give you a free trial. You can download it, backup your data, test the software and see if it’s a good fit for you. I really enjoy it and I’m recommending it to my customers over the old USB hard drive backup solutions. The pricing is also fair and on point for the service.
