When you purchase a new laptop from the big box stores or from an online manufacturer like Dell, HP, Lenovo and all the rest – this will install all kinds of software on it by default.
Well, this can lead to a bunch of UN-used or UN-wanted programs launching every time you turn on your computer. That can reduce the overall speed of your new computer. As well as slowing down your computer, this software can be annoying. You might get pop-up notifications about product registration, latest offers or licensing and support up sell options.
Is a stock Microsoft installation better?
Yes, when I get a new personal computer, or a customer gets a new computer I would usually just re-install windows. This will give you a stock install with little to no bloatware. Of course, Microsoft is getting worse as time goes on, but they are nowhere near as bad as Acer or some of the other value brand computer manufacture. I’m sure some of this software can do some neat things like providing advanced gestures or other neat things.
Over the years I have seen a lot of this pre-installed software is just a skinned version of software that is already on your computer. An example of this is software that will ‘speed up your computer by freeing up free disk space’ – you could get the same effect with Windows Disk Cleanup. I have seen some of these branded software that checks hard drive S.M.A.R.T Data (hard drive error checking, etc.)
Will re-installing windows make my PC faster?
Yes, I usually re-installing the Windows operating system on your computer, which will make your computer faster. Usually because of less programs are running on startup, etc. Also having someone (like me) who can install the basics for you and help you install a program correctly in the future can give you a real speed advantage. I’ve seen a lot of people be impressed by the speed increase that a Windows re-install can give. Also having your computer re-setup from the ground up will allow me to resolve any surface level issues right away. One example that I see occasionally, is having multiple antivirus software on the system. If I re-installed Windows, I would only install one antivirus, giving you a dramatic speed increase.
Re-installing Windows will give you a computer that is set up correctly by a professional the first time. I lean on my computer experience to get a better experience. I am always here to help.
