I was working on a laptop that came in and it was running Windows Vista. Windows Vista became end of life in 2012 – then the extended support for Vista ended in 2017.
I bring this up to give a better understanding of why this is an issue. Primarily, the system isn’t getting any updates. This is a problem because it’s not getting any bug / security fixes. The other problem is that no new software (windows components, drivers, etc.) is being created for this operating system.
Sure, you can find Windows Vista drivers and software packages, but the time is running out.
Another issue is that Windows Vista dates the system. This means that a laptop ten-year-old means that you are much more at risk for hardware failures like failing hard drives, RAM, LCD screens, keyboards, and anything else.
The customer agreed and is in the process of selecting another laptop as a replacement. Having something current will make a world of difference, even if the user must learn a new operating system.
